The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management
is planning to begin the “Heritage Heights Sanitary Sewer Repair/Replacement
Project” in the next few weeks. A community meeting regarding this project
was held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at 7:00 pm at the Mason Mill
Recreation Center located at 1340 McConnell Drive, Suite B, Decatur, GA 30033.
This is considered a maintenance project under
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers nationwide permit for removing and replacing
an existing sanitary sewer line. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division
will issue a permit for the buffer variance of the South Fork Peachtree Creek
sub-basin. This project is located at the South Fork Peachtree Creek at the
Heritage Heights subdivision.
The contractor for this project, Portland Utilities,
will replace the existing 42-inch sanitary sewer pipe with two 30-inch ductile
iron pipes. During the replacement process, flow from the existing pipes will
be diverted using temporary bypass pumping. The project will also include joint
replacement of a 27-inch pipe. This project will prevent future sanitary sewer
overflows (SSOs) in the South Fork Peachtree Creek. The project’s duration will
be approximately 120 days. The work will begin as soon as all permits have been
obtained.
The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management,
along with Portland Utilities, hosted the October 29th community meeting where
representatives answered questions and provided details on the project. The
Heritage Heights Sewer Repair/Replacement Project will ultimately provide better
protection of residents and the environment.
