The Scott
Candler Filter Plant, DeKalb County's only drinking
water production plant, was constructed in 1942
and has been expanded a number of times to reach
its current 128 million gallon a day (MGD) capacity.
A new water plant was needed to upgrade to the newest
treatment technologies available. The new plant
is being constructed next to the current plant.
Work on the new plant started in August 2002, and
is expected to be completed in 2006. All of the
major concrete work was finished in 2004, and the
concrete batch plant was dismantled at that time.
The cost of the new plant is $153 million; the final
expansion to 200 MGD is estimated to cost an additional
$50 million.
